Position Description – Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department

 

The Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group and the University of South Carolina are seeking a physician leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob/Gyn) for the Palmetto Health - USC Medical Group. This individual should be a practicing Ob/Gyn physician and should be eligible to receive a faculty appointment in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the USC School of Medicine Columbia.

The successful candidate will be a physician who has a reputation of outstanding care delivery and who has had experience in leading other physicians.   The candidate should have an understanding of and commitment to success in the academic missions of the department, including student and resident education and promotion of clinical research.

In the matrixed environment of our care delivery model, the department chair will partner with the Prisma Health Senior Medical Director for the Women’s Health Service line as they jointly promote the delivery of high quality care and the ongoing improvement of service delivery. The department chair will take primary responsibility for promoting the academic mission of the department, hiring of employed physicians, and managing day to day practice operations, with the support of the Senior Medical Director.  Likewise, the Senior Medical Director will take primary responsibility to work with Prisma Health leaders in establishment of service line strategies and will interface with the Prisma Health Clinical Councils, with support of the department chair.   

The department chair will report for clinical matters to the Chief Medical Officer of the Medical Group and for academic matters to the Executive Dean of the USC School of Medicine.

Responsibilities

 Management and Leadership:

  • Serve as the academic leader of the Department of Ob/Gyn for the Medical Group, managing the educational and research operations of the department.
  • In cooperation with administrative leaders of the Ob/Gyn department, lead the daily operations of Ob/Gyn clinical service delivery.
  • Collaborate with other departments and specialties.  Serve as a member of the Medical Group Clinical Advisory Committee.

         Ob/Gyn Department Management

  • Oversee the hiring of the physicians and advanced practice providers within the Dept. of Ob/Gyn and the Women’s Service line.   
  • Facilitate the granting of academic appointments within the School of Medicine for those physicians who seek such appointments.
  • Work with the Program Director of the Ob/Gyn Residency and Prisma Health Health GME leaders to promote outstanding Ob/Gyn Graduate Medical Education at Prisma Health Midlands.
  • Promote a spirit of inquiry and improvement among physicians, trainees, and other team members in the Ob/Gyn Dept. through encouragement of lifelong learning, support for involvement in research, and participation in quality improvement activities.
  • In collaboration with the Medical Director, ensure that appropriate professional development opportunities and mentoring resources are available to physicians within the Department of Ob/Gyn.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with independent community physicians practicing in Ob/Gyn or its subspecialties, including those affiliated with Prisma Health.
  • Be accessible, visible, and available to support physicians.
  • Attend School of Medicine Executive Committee meetings, Clinical Advisory Committee, Prisma Health Midlands Physician Leadership Council, and others appropriate meetings as necessary.

 Academic OBGYN Position

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Amarillo is seeking a board certified or board eligible OB/GYN generalist for a full time faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.  Most recent figures show 36,000+ patient visits per year, approximately 400 gynecologic surgeries annually, and 2,400 annual deliveries.  With groundbreaking for the School of Veterinary Medicine, Amarillo will be the only city in the county with a medical school, pharmacy school, and veterinary school on a single campus.

Duties would include supervision and teaching of residents and medical students, 2-3 days per week in resident and private clinics, labor and delivery coverage, gynecologic surgery, and in-house night call 4-5 times a month.  In house call is spread equally among all faculty and faculty receive additional compensation.

The successful candidate should have a strong commitment to provide clinical care and lead innovative change in a diverse clinical practice.
